The Drop Box… A Movie

Tonight, I went to go see the movie The Drop Box, which is the story of Pastor Lee Jong-rak, a pastor in Seoul who had set up a “drop box” at the front of his church to rescue babies that would otherwise be abandoned. I had seen several emails come across my inbox advertising the movie and I never really clicked on them or really read them. I will be honest I thought it was some Christian movie trying to profit off of the popular computer app called Dropbox. It wasn’t until the kid’s ministry director at my church, The River Church, showed me the trailer for the movie that I was intrigued to see the movie.

I thought that it would be a great movie to take my community group to go see since they only had three showings (March 3, 4, & 5) and one of the days was on the day we meet. Even though old man winter tried his best to keep us from going we braved the white death and headed off to the theater.

Pastor Lee and Brian Ivie

I was genuinely blown away at what I saw. This documentary that by the director’s, Brian Ivie, own admission was done with the hope that he could win an award at the Sundance Film Festival turned out to be completely life changing for Brian. At the end of the movie there was an interview with Brian, who shared about his motivation for making the film, but how that his motivation changed after spending some time with Pastor Lee and seeing the drop box. I loved this statement by Brian.

All I had to offer God was my sin and He gave me everything.

Brian realized that while doing this film that he had a need to receive Jesus as his Leader and Forgiver. He was overwhelmed with the grace and love that he saw in Pastor Lee’s life for these orphaned children. Pastor Lee’s source of grace and love for these orphaned children came because he was adopted into God’s family just like the children he adopted were a part of his family.

The Drop Box is a powerful story about a simple man that show us that there are real, beautiful, loving, selfless people in this world. I started reading a book called “The Case For Grace” by Lee Strobel and it is filled with beautiful stories of the grace of God being shown in people’s lives. I pray that we as Christ followers could be known as people of grace like Pastor Lee and the people that Lee writes about in his book.
